New X Men: Academy X - Contiene Spoilers

09 June, 2006

Determined to cath-up with all mutant series (quiete a hard task, but if we consider I'm a book-oholic,... well I won't read any book in a while and I'll devour as many comics as I can), lately it has been New X-Men's turn.
In the early 80's, Chris Claremont created which was the first Uncanny X-Men spin-off: The New Mutants, a group of teenagers recruited by Xavier to follow the steps of the original X-Men. The first team consisted of Cannonball (the first Guthrie to join the Institute), Wolfsbane, Psyche, Karma and Sunspot. As usual, some of them would left the team and another new mutants would cover their place. This way we met Magma, Magik, Cypher or Warlock... and many others.
After some years without appearing in any serie, in 2003 Marvel launched a new collection called New Mutants, where now Dani Moonstar, Karma, Northstar, Wolfsbane and Magma were entrusted to train a new litter of students at Xavier's. After 13 issues, the serie was re-launched under the name New X-Men: Academy X.
I must say at the begining the serie didn't draw my atention. I'm not the biggest fan of school issues. None of the many drawers that have worked in the serie have convinced me, unless perhaps Paco Medina, who is in charge of the pencils right now, and who has improved his draw a lot during the time he has been drawing this serie.
Here begin the Spoiler-zone.
The first plots are the usual in this cases: character's introduction, needles between the teams... If I must choose, my favourite is Noriko Ashida, Surge. She's cute, she's strong and her power rocks.
Two teams star the serie, one of them are the New Mutants, which advisor is Danielle Moonstar, and the other is called Hellions and their advisor is... yes, of course, Emma Frost.
This stage leave us some interesting stories, as "Too much information", #11 and #12, where is suggested a future where David (Prodigy) gets ride of the mental block that avoids him to keep all the knowledge he leeches from others using his mutant power.
Afterwords came House of M that... well, is a tie-in without big trascendence.
After Decimation, from the 182 students at Xavier's, only 27 remain powered, and this take us to the better plot I've read in a while!!
Is this image familiar to you??

Stryker is back. He has a Nimrod Sentinel, that has somehow arrived from the future, and shows him who are the mutants that can endanger his 'plan'. He deceives Icarus, he kills 42 depowered students when they were been evacuated from the Institute, he has murdered Laurie Collins and he intends to kill every single boy at Xavier's. Only the intervention of Laura, X-23 (the 23rd try to clone Wolverine by Weapon-X programm,... but that's another story), who is in the Institute since House of M events, save the day, because she is shoted instead of Sooraya, who in Stryker's vision was the only one able to stop them.
Now Stryker is dead, but nothing will ever be the same.

Te voy a enlazar.
