In the Battle of Thermopylae of 480 BC an alliance of Greek city-states fought the invading Persian army in the pass of Thermopylae. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks delayed the enemy in one of the most famous last stands of history. A small force led by King Leonidas of Sparta blocked the only road through which the massive army of Xerxes I could pass. The Persians succeeded in defeating the Greeks but sustained heavy losses, disproportionate to those of the Greeks. A local resident named Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks, revealing a mountain path that led behind the Greek lines. Dismissing the rest of the army, King Leonidas stayed behind with 300 Spartans and 700 Thespian volunteers. Though they knew it meant their own deaths, they secured the retreat of the other Greek forces.

In may 1998, Frank Miller published the first of 5 issues depicting this battle from the perspective of Leonidas I, king of Sparta. The movie based on the graphic novel will premier 2007, and thuough Holliwood will smooth the film, even if they keep only one third the bloodshed we see in the comic,... will be a very violent film.

The comic start with the spartan guard marching to fight Xerxes' army. It is a very important holiday in Sparta and it is forbidden to fight in that days. Leonidas, sure that Xerxes will annihilate them if they wait too long, gather his guard (the 300 Spartans) and rush to face the enemy, hoping to stop them in the pass of Thermopylae.

Even joined by some other greek's cities armies, Xerxes' army overwhelming outnumber them, but in the narrow pass of Thermopylae the numbers are not what matters.

However, a greek traitor informs Xerxes about a way to surround the greek army. Most of them left as soon as the scouts inform them about this manoeuvre, but Spartans and Thespian make their last stand to guarantee their retreat. You all can figure out how this finish.

Simonides composed a well-known epigram, which was engraved as an epitaph on a commemorative stone placed on top of the burial mound of the Spartans at Thermopylae. It is also the hill on which the last of them died. Spyridon Marinatos discovered large numbers of Persian arrowheads there. The original stone is not to be found now.Instead the epitaph was engraved on a new stone erected in 1955. The text is
And it could be translated as
Go tell the Spartans, passerby,
That here, by Spartan law, we lie
Did I say already it was a very violent comic?

Oh, extranjero, informa a Esparta que aquí yacemos
todavía obedientes a sus leyes

November comics

05 December, 2006

As I did in October, here comes the stuff I have read this month. First of all I want to talk about Kevin Smith comics. I read Clerks' comics, Jay and Silent Bob's comics and the special Bluntman and Chronic. They are great. The pencils are quite good (some frames are really great). And the stories are really funny. Besides, if you have seen all Smith's movies, you will really enjoy reading these comics and filling the gaps. I mean, it is supposse that the comics and the movies are complementary. You should read it! Don´t miss the Clerk's cut scene! 10/10
And now, the Marvel stuff:

Y ahora, lo de Marvel.
