R.I.P., Dave Cockrum

28 November, 2006

Despite it is a bit late and I'm sure you saw this already in a lot of sites, as an X-Men fan, I cannot help to write a few words for Dave Cockrum, who passed away sunday morning from complications relating to Diabetes.
For those who don't know, Dave Cockrum and Len Wein co-created the new team of X-Men back in 1975, relaunching the mutant franchise to the top. You can read more about him at Wikipedia.

Heroes

24 November, 2006

I don't like TV. I don't like TV series. Ok, it had its charm to rush home after school to see Oliver and Benji. But you know, you grow up, you have tons of things to do, and you just cannot be in front of the TV at certain time to watch something.
But Internet has changed this, as it has changed many things. You just download the episode and you watch it when you can (that is, AS SOON AS YOU CAN).
A friend suggested me to watch Heroes... and, well, I liked it so much that I saw 8 episodes in two days. And I was going to see the ninth (the last by the moment), when I realized, o fucking shit, that what I downloaded was a TV spot, and not the proper episode. I won't turn off the computer tonight, and tomorrow morning, guess the first thing I'll do...

But let's talk a little bit about the serie. Suddenly, ordinary people are discovering extraordinary abilities. We have Isaac Mendez, sort of Destiny, who can paint the future (but only when he is high). Micah Sanders, kind of Forge. Matt Parkman, the telepath of the serie, still unable to control his recently discovered abilities, and filter what to hear and what not to. Niki Sanders has a dark side hidden inside, and his husband D.L. Sanders is a big, black, Kitty Pride. Nathan Petrelli can fly, his brother Peter Petrelli is sort of Mimic. And my two favourite characters, Claire Bennet, the hot cheerleader which healing factor makes Wolverine look like a moribund, and Hiro Nakamura, who can bend space and time... which means he can stop time, teleport himself and travel back and for to the future... despite he has very little control over his powers.
There they are, among lot of other mutants, while an indian genetist, Mohinder Suresh, is following the steps of his father, trying to discover this extraordinary people, some misterious guys follow and study them, and a guy called Slayton tracks them down and eat their brains.

Tomorrow I'll discover why saving the cheerleader is saving the world.

What are you waiting for watching it!!!

What a picture!!

19 November, 2006

Almost 80 yeras ago, a physics conference held in Brussels, in the lapse between the two WW, gathered together an unrepeatable group of privileged minds. At the beginig of the past century, belgium industrial and Philantropist Ernest Solvay used part of his fortune in holding several conferences about physics where the more privileged minds of the moment were invited. Out of doubt, the most famous was the fifth, which took place in October 1927, and where fathers of quantum physic and other distinguished figures attended. From that unrepeatable group of genious, gathered about the theme ''Electrons and Photons", remains which is for many the most famous picture of the history of science. From the 29 who attended, 17 were already, or will be, Nobel prices. One can tell the significance of the gather and the attendents when recognice Pauli, Schrödinger, Einstein, Dirac, Marie Curie, Bohr, Planck, Lorentz and Heisenberg , just saying the more famous of them.

This is the complete list of attendents:

(Top line, from left to right)
A. Piccard, E. Henriot, P. Ehrenfest, Ed. Herzen, Th. De Donder, E. Schrödinger, E. Verschaffelt, W. Pauli, W. Heisenberg, R.H. Fowler, L. Brillouin.

(Mid line, from left to right)
P. Debye, M. Knudsen, W.L. Bragg, H.A. Kramers, P.A.M. Dirac, A.H. Compton, L. de Broglie, M. Born, N. Bohr.
(Bottom line, from left to right)
I. Langmuir, M. Planck, Madame. Curie, H.A. Lorentz, A. Einstein, P. Langevin, Ch. E. Guye, C.T.R. Wilson, y O.W. Richardson.

With the perspective gave by the 78 years that have gone, and considering what their works mean for physics nowadays, you can tell for sure this picture is the biggest genious crew in history.

The anecdote of that encounter was starred by Einstein and Bohr. While both were arguing about Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, the first of them stated: "God does not play dice", and Bohr replied "Einstein, stop telling God what to do"

A. Piccard, E. Henriot, P. Ehrenfest, Ed. Herzen, Th. De Donder, E. Schrödinger, E. Verschaffelt, W. Pauli, W. Heisenberg, R.H. Fowler, L. Brillouin.

(Hilera intermedia, de izquierda a derecha)
P. Debye, M. Knudsen, W.L. Bragg, H.A. Kramers, P.A.M. Dirac, A.H. Compton, L. de Broglie, M. Born, N. Bohr.

(Hilera inferior, de izquierda a derecha)
I. Langmuir, M. Planck, Madame. Curie, H.A. Lorentz, A. Einstein, P. Langevin, Ch. E. Guye, C.T.R. Wilson, y O.W. Richardson.

Good movies and beautiful movies

08 November, 2006

This is a post recovered from my previous blog.

People had tried to clasify movies in as many groups as rock, but the clasiffication I prupose today is much more intense and subjetive. For me, there is a big difference between a good movie and a nice movie.
A good movie raised to n (n tending to infinite) is an awesome movie. Everybody knows what that is; we are talking about movies like 'SW III: The revenge of the Sith', 'LOTR III:The Return of the King', 'Serenity',... some awesome movies are also beautiful movies, but usually we're talking about different things.
A nice movie raised to n (n tending to infinite) is a beautiful movie. Is that kind of movie that perhaps don't have a very big budget, but it has a big story... it touch you, deep inside. In beautiful movies there aren't great explosions, not either epic battles, the good one not always win, and we almost never have a happy ending.
So now I'll let my more romantic and silly vein go out, and I'll talk you about that beautiful movies; Because yes, that lout who complains about people who don't jump and kick at concerts cries with a lot of movies. And with books. And with comics. I have a great gift to get so inside the story sometimes I think all that is happening to me. Who haven't weep even a tear when the sheeps leave the Grey Harbours, don't deserve to live.
This are, according to me, the most beautiful movies I've ever seen. Suggestions are welcomed.

A walk to remember: Based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks, is the typical story about the town's lout who fall in love with the minister's daughter. Anyway, it has some good points. It hasn't a happy ending.

American History X: Both an awesome and a beautiful movie. Derek is a skin-head imprisioned for the murder of two black guys. When he come out, try to transform his little brother, who is keeping his example. He must write a work for his teacher (black) which is intitled 'American History X'. Bad ending.

Backdraft:Action classic. The two sons of a Chicago fireman, who died at dutie, keep after his steps. Bad ending.

Big Fish: surrealistic, beautiful, Tim Burton.

Braveheart:Also an awesome movie. Everybody knows how it ends.

Dying young:Hilary (Julia Roberts) is a pretty young women who fall in love with a boy who suffer from cancer. Guess the end.

El hijo de la novia: Argentinian. Rafael Belvedere is not happy with his life, but a heart attack and some unexpected events will make him rebuild his past and recover his present. Meanwhile, he will give all his support to his father, who wants to fulfil his mother wish: to merry by the church.

I am David:Based on a novel by Ann Holm. It's about a 12 year old boy who scape from a nazi concentration camp and set out on an unbelievable journey searching for his mother. Hey! Here we have one happy ending.

K.Pax: Prot is arrested at Grand Central, but he says he comes from other planet. He is confined in a mental hospital, and the lives of all who meet him will never be the same.

Mar Adentro: No comments. And you all know how it ends.

Million Dollar Baby: Frankie Dunn accepts to train a girl, despite his initial reluctances. Bad ending.

Moulin Rouge: Paris, 1899. Christian, a young man who wants to become a poet, fall in love with a courtesan of the Moulin Rouge. We haven't here a happy ending either (Christian... tell our story). I've seen it at last 6 times. I love it.

The last of the mohicans:Hawkeye is a white adopted by the mohican indians who lives with his father Chingachgook and his brother. This haven't a happy ending either.

The mission:An awesome movie too. Set on the southamerican colonies. Of course, it has a bad ending.

The motorcycle diaries: In 1952, two young argentinians, Ernesto Guevara and Alberto Granado, set out on the journey that will change their lives, to discover the real LatinAmerica. The movie hasn't a bad ending, but we all know how he ended, so it's sad anyway.

The notebook:A man keeps reading an old notebook day after day to a women who he visited in an old people's home. Ain't a happy ending.

Titanic: No comments. And yes, I liked it.

Two brothers: Directed by Jean-Jaques Annaud. It's about two brothers teared appart by hunters. Years after, both tigers meet again in a deathmatch at Prince's arena. It's the most beautiful movie I've ever seen. I was all the fucking movie crying.

Un long dimanche de fianÇailles:At the end of WWI, Mathilde finds out that his fiance Manech is one of the 5 soldiers punished by a martial court.

So that's all by now. You can now laugh at me and my weird liking about tear-jerking movies. Suggestions of other films for the list are always welcomed.

Estamos hablando de ‘SW III: The revenge of sith’, ‘LOTR III: The Return of the King’, Serenity,...

Big Fish: surrealista, preciosa, Tim Burton.

Acaba mal (‘Christian... tell our story’). La he visto por lo menos 6 veces. Me encanta.

Titanic: Sin comentarios. Todos sabeis el final.

Two brothers (Dos hermanos): Dirigida por Jean-Jacques Annaud.

I cannot say I really enjoy CW FL. I think the best part of the comic are the last pages, with real letters and poems from war times. The rest,... well, I think is kind of messy to mix up so many stories in so few pages. 6/10

I didn't like this LS, neither the plot nor the draws. And you don't need it to follow CW. 4/10

HELLSTORM: SON OF SATAN #1
The Story: “Equinox,” Part 1 of 5
When the Son of Satan is your best option, God help you.
New Orleans. The Big Easy. The membrane between our world and the underworld has always been a little thinner here. Now, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the outpouring of human misery has drawn demons like sharks to a bloodbath. What better time for Damian Hellstorm --- a.k.a. The Son of Satan -- to pay a visit?
It starts with the doctor who delivers a baby that vanishes into the night. A doctor who is devoured by demons wearing New Orleans PD badges. Demons who work for someone--or something--that’s descended on the Big Easy and doesn’t’ give a damn who Hellstorm or his father is. Something that’s harvesting body parts in a furious race toward unspeakable purposes. This is The Son of Satan as you’ve never seen him before, brought to you by acclaimed novelist Alexander Irvine (The Narrows), with searing art by Russell Braun (Animal Man) and Klaus Janson.

Not everything in the world are cute girls in spandex costumes! Some explicit content and a different story are good now and then. 8/10

WOLVERINE 47 #47
The Story: CIVIL WAR Tie-In!
“Vendetta,” Part 6
This is it! The senses-shattering conclusion to the Civil War tie-in Vendetta! It had to come down to this: At 30 thousand feet, aboard the SHIELD Helicarrier, it’s Logan vs. SHIELD’s elite Super Human Restraint Unit...and one of the Marvel Universe’s most powerful super heroes: The Sentry! Logan started this story as the hunter, but he’s finishing it as the prey!
32 PGS./Parental Advisory ...$2.99

I don't like Humberto Ramos' pencils. Not at all. And the story... well, it can be resumed in the end of the first Wolverine's CW tie-in: 'I been an avenger for a couple'a of months now. And I finally have something to avenge.' 6/10

X-FACTOR #12
The Story:It all climaxes here: The final showdown with Mr. Tryp and Singularity, X-Factor’s desperate race to save all the former mutants from annihilation, and the truth behind the shocking traitor in their midst.
32 PGS./Rated T+ ...$2.99

It's not my favourite stile, nor the plots nor the draws, and besides I think they tried to make something a bit more black and it felt between two waters. Anyway, X-Factor is a different alternative to the classic superheroes comic. I like Layla character. 7/10.

I don't follow Cap serie usually, so, I don't understand what is Bucky doing there. Nevermind. 6/10

Tampoco importa. 6/10

More troubled people chosing side in CW. Anyway, this issue has some interest in the Inhuman point of view about all of this. Things are really different from outside. 7/10

A very interesting story, just lest hope the end would be up to it. And even if Bachalo is not my favourite drawer... well, the guy has some style. 8/10

David el gnomo

Sorry, this post is only in Spanish.
