November comics

05 December, 2006

As I did in October, here comes the stuff I have read this month. First of all I want to talk about Kevin Smith comics. I read Clerks' comics, Jay and Silent Bob's comics and the special Bluntman and Chronic. They are great. The pencils are quite good (some frames are really great). And the stories are really funny. Besides, if you have seen all Smith's movies, you will really enjoy reading these comics and filling the gaps. I mean, it is supposse that the comics and the movies are complementary. You should read it! Don´t miss the Clerk's cut scene! 10/10
And now, the Marvel stuff:

Y ahora, lo de Marvel.

This issue ends just like all of us knew it will, but anyway... I think the plot has become a little messy in the last times. I preferred it when it was just Deadpool nonsense. It had its style. 7/10

32 PGS./Rated A ...$2.99

I'm sure I told you several times, but I never really liked Bucket-Head. He as head of S.H.I.E.L.D., well... it's just creepy. Besides, the comic ain't nothing special. 5/10

MOON KNIGHT #6
Conclusion to first story arc!
“Glories Such As These”: It’s never about speed or slick moves or razor-sharp reflexes. It’s about what you can take. It’s about how much pain you can absorb. When the Son of Satan is your best option, God help you.
New Orleans. The Big Easy. The membrane between our world and the underworld has always been a little thinner here. Demons who work for someone--or something--that’s harvesting body parts in a furious race toward unspeakable purposes. For Daimon Hellstorm, this means one thing: It’s hunting season. Like Sun Tzu said, “Some battles can be won without firing a single arrow. All you need to do is sow chaos.” And who better to do that than the Son of Satan?

R.I.P., Dave Cockrum

28 November, 2006

Despite it is a bit late and I'm sure you saw this already in a lot of sites, as an X-Men fan, I cannot help to write a few words for Dave Cockrum, who passed away sunday morning from complications relating to Diabetes.
For those who don't know, Dave Cockrum and Len Wein co-created the new team of X-Men back in 1975, relaunching the mutant franchise to the top. You can read more about him at Wikipedia.

Heroes

24 November, 2006

I don't like TV. I don't like TV series. Ok, it had its charm to rush home after school to see Oliver and Benji. But you know, you grow up, you have tons of things to do, and you just cannot be in front of the TV at certain time to watch something.
But Internet has changed this, as it has changed many things. You just download the episode and you watch it when you can (that is, AS SOON AS YOU CAN).
A friend suggested me to watch Heroes... and, well, I liked it so much that I saw 8 episodes in two days. And I was going to see the ninth (the last by the moment), when I realized, o fucking shit, that what I downloaded was a TV spot, and not the proper episode. I won't turn off the computer tonight, and tomorrow morning, guess the first thing I'll do...

But let's talk a little bit about the serie. Suddenly, ordinary people are discovering extraordinary abilities. We have Isaac Mendez, sort of Destiny, who can paint the future (but only when he is high). Micah Sanders, kind of Forge. Matt Parkman, the telepath of the serie, still unable to control his recently discovered abilities, and filter what to hear and what not to. Niki Sanders has a dark side hidden inside, and his husband D.L. Sanders is a big, black, Kitty Pride. Nathan Petrelli can fly, his brother Peter Petrelli is sort of Mimic. And my two favourite characters, Claire Bennet, the hot cheerleader which healing factor makes Wolverine look like a moribund, and Hiro Nakamura, who can bend space and time... which means he can stop time, teleport himself and travel back and for to the future... despite he has very little control over his powers.
There they are, among lot of other mutants, while an indian genetist, Mohinder Suresh, is following the steps of his father, trying to discover this extraordinary people, some misterious guys follow and study them, and a guy called Slayton tracks them down and eat their brains.

Tomorrow I'll discover why saving the cheerleader is saving the world.

What are you waiting for watching it!!!

Almost 80 yeras ago, a physics conference held in Brussels, in the lapse between the two WW, gathered together an unrepeatable group of privileged minds. At the beginig of the past century, belgium industrial and Philantropist Ernest Solvay used part of his fortune in holding several conferences about physics where the more privileged minds of the moment were invited. Out of doubt, the most famous was the fifth, which took place in October 1927, and where fathers of quantum physic and other distinguished figures attended. From that unrepeatable group of genious, gathered about the theme ''Electrons and Photons", remains which is for many the most famous picture of the history of science. From the 29 who attended, 17 were already, or will be, Nobel prices. One can tell the significance of the gather and the attendents when recognice Pauli, Schrödinger, Einstein, Dirac, Marie Curie, Bohr, Planck, Lorentz and Heisenberg , just saying the more famous of them.

This is the complete list of attendents:

(Top line, from left to right)
A. Piccard, E. Henriot, P. Ehrenfest, Ed. Herzen, Th. De Donder, E. Schrödinger, E. Verschaffelt, W. Pauli, W. Heisenberg, R.H. Fowler, L. Brillouin.

(Mid line, from left to right)
P. Debye, M. Knudsen, W.L. Bragg, H.A. Kramers, P.A.M. Dirac, A.H. Compton, L. de Broglie, M. Born, N. Bohr.
(Bottom line, from left to right)
I. Langmuir, M. Planck, Madame. Curie, H.A. Lorentz, A. Einstein, P. Langevin, Ch. E. Guye, C.T.R. Wilson, y O.W. Richardson.

With the perspective gave by the 78 years that have gone, and considering what their works mean for physics nowadays, you can tell for sure this picture is the biggest genious crew in history.

The anecdote of that encounter was starred by Einstein and Bohr. While both were arguing about Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, the first of them stated: "God does not play dice", and Bohr replied "Einstein, stop telling God what to do"

A. Piccard, E. Henriot, P. Ehrenfest, Ed. Herzen, Th. De Donder, E. Schrödinger, E. Verschaffelt, W. Pauli, W. Heisenberg, R.H. Fowler, L. Brillouin.

(Hilera intermedia, de izquierda a derecha)
P. Debye, M. Knudsen, W.L. Bragg, H.A. Kramers, P.A.M. Dirac, A.H. Compton, L. de Broglie, M. Born, N. Bohr.

(Hilera inferior, de izquierda a derecha)
I. Langmuir, M. Planck, Madame. Curie, H.A. Lorentz, A. Einstein, P. Langevin, Ch. E. Guye, C.T.R. Wilson, y O.W. Richardson.

Good movies and beautiful movies

08 November, 2006

This is a post recovered from my previous blog.

People had tried to clasify movies in as many groups as rock, but the clasiffication I prupose today is much more intense and subjetive. For me, there is a big difference between a good movie and a nice movie.
A good movie raised to n (n tending to infinite) is an awesome movie. Everybody knows what that is; we are talking about movies like 'SW III: The revenge of the Sith', 'LOTR III:The Return of the King', 'Serenity',... some awesome movies are also beautiful movies, but usually we're talking about different things.
A nice movie raised to n (n tending to infinite) is a beautiful movie. Is that kind of movie that perhaps don't have a very big budget, but it has a big story... it touch you, deep inside. In beautiful movies there aren't great explosions, not either epic battles, the good one not always win, and we almost never have a happy ending.
So now I'll let my more romantic and silly vein go out, and I'll talk you about that beautiful movies; Because yes, that lout who complains about people who don't jump and kick at concerts cries with a lot of movies. And with books. And with comics. I have a great gift to get so inside the story sometimes I think all that is happening to me. Who haven't weep even a tear when the sheeps leave the Grey Harbours, don't deserve to live.
This are, according to me, the most beautiful movies I've ever seen. Suggestions are welcomed.

A walk to remember: Based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks, is the typical story about the town's lout who fall in love with the minister's daughter. Anyway, it has some good points. It hasn't a happy ending.

American History X: Both an awesome and a beautiful movie. Derek is a skin-head imprisioned for the murder of two black guys. When he come out, try to transform his little brother, who is keeping his example. He must write a work for his teacher (black) which is intitled 'American History X'. Bad ending.

Backdraft:Action classic. The two sons of a Chicago fireman, who died at dutie, keep after his steps. Bad ending.

Big Fish: surrealistic, beautiful, Tim Burton.

Braveheart:Also an awesome movie. Everybody knows how it ends.

Dying young:Hilary (Julia Roberts) is a pretty young women who fall in love with a boy who suffer from cancer. Guess the end.

El hijo de la novia: Argentinian. Rafael Belvedere is not happy with his life, but a heart attack and some unexpected events will make him rebuild his past and recover his present. Meanwhile, he will give all his support to his father, who wants to fulfil his mother wish: to merry by the church.

I am David:Based on a novel by Ann Holm. It's about a 12 year old boy who scape from a nazi concentration camp and set out on an unbelievable journey searching for his mother. Hey! Here we have one happy ending.

K.Pax: Prot is arrested at Grand Central, but he says he comes from other planet. He is confined in a mental hospital, and the lives of all who meet him will never be the same.

Mar Adentro: No comments. And you all know how it ends.

Million Dollar Baby: Frankie Dunn accepts to train a girl, despite his initial reluctances. Bad ending.

Moulin Rouge: Paris, 1899. Christian, a young man who wants to become a poet, fall in love with a courtesan of the Moulin Rouge. We haven't here a happy ending either (Christian... tell our story). I've seen it at last 6 times. I love it.

The last of the mohicans:Hawkeye is a white adopted by the mohican indians who lives with his father Chingachgook and his brother. This haven't a happy ending either.

The mission:An awesome movie too. Set on the southamerican colonies. Of course, it has a bad ending.

The motorcycle diaries: In 1952, two young argentinians, Ernesto Guevara and Alberto Granado, set out on the journey that will change their lives, to discover the real LatinAmerica. The movie hasn't a bad ending, but we all know how he ended, so it's sad anyway.

The notebook:A man keeps reading an old notebook day after day to a women who he visited in an old people's home. Ain't a happy ending.

Titanic: No comments. And yes, I liked it.

Two brothers: Directed by Jean-Jaques Annaud. It's about two brothers teared appart by hunters. Years after, both tigers meet again in a deathmatch at Prince's arena. It's the most beautiful movie I've ever seen. I was all the fucking movie crying.

Un long dimanche de fianÇailles:At the end of WWI, Mathilde finds out that his fiance Manech is one of the 5 soldiers punished by a martial court.

So that's all by now. You can now laugh at me and my weird liking about tear-jerking movies. Suggestions of other films for the list are always welcomed.

Estamos hablando de ‘SW III: The revenge of sith’, ‘LOTR III: The Return of the King’, Serenity,...

Big Fish: surrealista, preciosa, Tim Burton.

Acaba mal (‘Christian... tell our story’). La he visto por lo menos 6 veces. Me encanta.

Titanic: Sin comentarios. Todos sabeis el final.

Two brothers (Dos hermanos): Dirigida por Jean-Jacques Annaud.

32 PGS./Rated T+ ...$2.99

I cannot say I really enjoy CW FL. I think the best part of the comic are the last pages, with real letters and poems from war times. The rest,... well, I think is kind of messy to mix up so many stories in so few pages. 6/10

I love this serie. Maybe Paco Medina is not the best drawer in the world, but he is quite good. Nice chicks (Laura and Nori can compete with Rachel and Betsy, no doubt that for a second), very powerful guys (ok, maybe sometimes Hellion is just too powerful), and interesting stories. 7/10

HELLSTORM: SON OF SATAN #1
The Story: “Equinox,” Part 1 of 5
When the Son of Satan is your best option, God help you.
New Orleans. The Big Easy. The membrane between our world and the underworld has always been a little thinner here. Now, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the outpouring of human misery has drawn demons like sharks to a bloodbath. What better time for Damian Hellstorm --- a.k.a. The Son of Satan -- to pay a visit?
It starts with the doctor who delivers a baby that vanishes into the night. A doctor who is devoured by demons wearing New Orleans PD badges. Demons who work for someone--or something--that’s descended on the Big Easy and doesn’t’ give a damn who Hellstorm or his father is. Something that’s harvesting body parts in a furious race toward unspeakable purposes. This is The Son of Satan as you’ve never seen him before, brought to you by acclaimed novelist Alexander Irvine (The Narrows), with searing art by Russell Braun (Animal Man) and Klaus Janson.

WOLVERINE 47 #47

“Vendetta,” Part 6
This is it! The senses-shattering conclusion to the Civil War tie-in Vendetta! It had to come down to this: At 30 thousand feet, aboard the SHIELD Helicarrier, it’s Logan vs. SHIELD’s elite Super Human Restraint Unit...and one of the Marvel Universe’s most powerful super heroes: The Sentry! Logan started this story as the hunter, but he’s finishing it as the prey!
32 PGS./Parental Advisory ...$2.99

I don't like Humberto Ramos' pencils. Not at all. And the story... well, it can be resumed in the end of the first Wolverine's CW tie-in: 'I been an avenger for a couple'a of months now. And I finally have something to avenge.' 6/10

X-FACTOR #12
The Story:It all climaxes here: The final showdown with Mr. Tryp and Singularity, X-Factor’s desperate race to save all the former mutants from annihilation, and the truth behind the shocking traitor in their midst.
32 PGS./Rated T+ ...$2.99

It's not my favourite stile, nor the plots nor the draws, and besides I think they tried to make something a bit more black and it felt between two waters. Anyway, X-Factor is a different alternative to the classic superheroes comic. I like Layla character. 7/10.

David el gnomo

Sorry, this post is only in Spanish.

See ya in hell

31 October, 2006

This is a post I wanted to recover from my old blog.

I don't know how many of you have read Dante's Divine Comedy. In it, the poet gives us a complete description of Hell, Purgatory and Heaven, divided in circles. At the second circle of Hell awaits you Minos, who was king of Crete three generations before the war of Troya: son of Zeus and Europa, brother of Radamantis and Sarpedón. He is suposed to have been the first civilizing Crete, and ruled its people with justice and goodness, giving them superb laws. Radamantis is known for writing the Cretish Code, which was the model for many other greek cities. By their justice skills, Minos and Radamantis were instituted as judges in Hell. Minos had a lot of love affairs, and he is suposed to have invented pederasty, that's why he presides the circle of lust; and because he was a fair ruler, he is the one who judges the deads.

Surfin' around the web I found a test that plays Minos' role

Canto V

Thus I descended from the first circle down into the second, which girdles less space, and so much more woe that it goads to wailing. There abides Minos horribly, and snarls; he examines the sins at the entrance; he judges, and he sends according as he entwines himself. I mean, that, when the miscreant spirit comes there before him, it confesses itself wholly, and that discerner of sins sees what place of Hell is for it; he girdles himself with his tail so many times as the degrees he wills it should be sent down. Always before him stand many of them. They go, in turn, each to the judgment; they speak, and hear, and then are whirled below. so it says you to which level in Hell are you going to go.

My results are below. In sixth circle the heretics groan, buried in fire sepulchres. It could be worst. You are sitting or laying all day, and you can talk for eternity. Besides, I'm sure the company there is great. I guess it would be worst to stay in the second circle...

"a place mute of all light, that bellows as the sea does in a tempest, if it be combated by opposing winds. The infernal hurricane that never rests carries along the spirits in its rapine; whirling and smiting it molests them. When they arrive before its rushing blast, here are shrieks, and bewailing, and lamenting; here they blaspheme the power divine".

Despite I'm sure I'll be in very good female company (Cleopatra and Helena from Troy are there)... being all day from here to there carried by the wind... just for a while, like an extreme sport, it's O.K., butI'm pretty sure you get tired very soon. I hope they don't give you nothing to eat in Hell, otherwise lustfuls will be bringing up all the time.

So... See ya in Hell!!

The Dante's Inferno Test has banished you to the Sixth Level of Hell - The City of Dis!
Here is how you matched up against all the levels:
LevelScore
Purgatory (Repenting Believers)Very Low
Level 1 - Limbo (Virtuous Non-Believers)Very Low
Level 2 (Lustful)Extreme
Level 3 (Gluttonous)Moderate
Level 4 (Prodigal and Avaricious)Very High
Level 5 (Wrathful and Gloomy)Very High
Level 6 - The City of Dis (Heretics)Extreme
Level 7 (Violent)Moderate
Level 8- the Malebolge (Fraudulent, Malicious, Panderers)High
Level 9 - Cocytus (Treacherous)Very High

Take the Dante Inferno Hell Test

Yo he ido a parar al sexto círculo.

X-Men, the End - Spoiler Warning

25 October, 2006

I just finished reading the third book of X-Men, the End, written by Chris Claremont, and drawed by Sean Chen, with covers by Greg Land.

It is not the master piece they pretend it to be, and the story gets a bit too twisted for me in some parts (specially in the third book), but it is somehow coherent, and if you consider that Claremont has been who has written more (and probably best) X-Men stories, it corresponds to him to write theirs last and more epic story.

Every story has an end. And this is the end of the X-Men. It digs deep in their relationships, their ghosts from the past, their allies, their foes,... It is about how lifetime enemies ally to destroy the X-Men, about how they fight back, and about the consequences of all it.
In the end, the X-Men have to end.

Spoiler warning.

In the first book, events are set in motion.
The story starts with a girl, Aliyah Bishop, daughter of Bishop and Deathbird (Lilandra's older sister). The Shi'Ar empire is in Chaos, and she is following a group of Krees who are trading with slavers. Suddenly she is in the middle of a war between the Brood, the Kree and the Skrulls. She manage to get away with Nocturne (who was slaved and brainwashed) and Jean Grey... the weapon the Kree were buying to the slavers.

The X-Men are attacked in several locations by warskrulls, what make them think they could be at war with the Shi'Ar.
Following his own agenda, Sinister ambush X-Factor and call Gambit in an old debt, and he gets both Gambit and Rogue's and Cyclops and Emma's children.
Meanwhile, The Queen Goblin, Genesis and Stryfe attack and destroy the X-Mansion. Casualties are hard to count. When the anti-matter reactor collapses... they saw the fireball in Washington.

Long time ago, Destiny wrote her 'Books of Truth'... one of her prophecies stands
'Phoenix's fall shall be the X-Men's bane,
Phoenix reborn shall herald their doom'.
Book two leaves us some very emotive moments, as Rogue's dead.

In book three The X-Men travel to Shi'Ar throne world, Chandilar, to fight their last and more epic fight, against Khan, Cassandra Nova, Phoenix and the Brood.

Spoiler warning.

'Phoenix's fall shall be the X-Men's bane,
Phoenix reborn shall herald their doom'.

16 October, 2006

How long will take to our marks to go? If our specie wiped out right now...

  • Inmediatly: Most of the endangered species would start to recover.
  • 24-48 hours: Light polution is over.
  • 3 months: Atmospheric polution (nitrogen and sulfur oxids) cuts off.
  • In 10 years: Methane would dissapear from the atmosphere.
  • In 20 years: Rural roads and little towns would be covered by vegetation. Geneticaly modified harvests dissapear.
  • In 50 years: Sea species population recovers. Nitrates and phosphates disspaear from the water.
  • Between 50 and 100 years: Streets and buildings in the cities would ve covered by vegetation.
  • 100 years: Wooden buildings would fall to pieces.
  • 100 to 200 years: Bridges crumble.
  • In 200 years: Metal and cristal buildings fall to pieces. The 'grain belt' in the USA is a meadow again.
  • In 250 years: The dams would crumble.
  • In 500 years: Coral regenerates.
  • Between 500 and 1.000 years: Most of the organic waste in the rubish dumps decomposes.
  • 1.000 years: Most of the stone, concret and brick buildings has dissapeared; the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere is back at it pre-industrial level.
  • 50.000 years: Most of the plastic and cristal would decompose.
  • After 50.000 years the existence of mankind is marked just by some archeological remains. but some chemical man-made products wouldn't dissapear until 200.000 years after and radiactive waste could still be lethal two million years after.

(Treehugger vía Boing Boing; The article Imagine Earth without people explains it with more detail.)

Come one people!! We are still in time to save our planet!! Hold our hands all together towards extinction!!!

Yes to War , No to sex ??

08 October, 2006

For a long time we had to bear with stupid (and when I say stupid I mean really STUPID) parent, religious and family associations that have nothing better to do with their misserable lives that forbid the rest of the world to enjoy their lifes.
I mean, it's OK for me if you don't wanna practice sex until you are married, if you don't wanna listen to heavy metal because it's satanic, if you don't wanna watch cartoons or whatever, but... what the fuck do you care what I do with my fucking life!!!

I'm sure all of you remember the controversy about I dunno what sexual message in the clouds of The Lion King, I'm sure in your country (whichever it is) there has been controversy about South Park, and I'm damm sure in every little corner of this wretched world there is an asshole thinking about prohibiting anyone else to have fun.

I'm now living in Sweden, but anyway I echo the complains in Cosas de Frikis about the last one of this attitudes in Spain. There is a TV channel, called La sexta (The sixth), that was broadcasting hentai series in late-night timetable. One of those stupid associations sued them, and they stopped broadcasting it, but after the millions of emails, letters and calls from viewers complaining about the cancellation of the serie, they started broadcasting again.
Ole tus huevos, like we say in Spain.

I wan't to say a few thing to these fascist, reactionary, peasants of Sunday mass: If you don't wanna watch, don't. If you don't wanna listen, don't. If you don't want your children to do something, forbid them.
Cartoons are not anly for children, watching hentai doesn't make us perverts and playing role games doesn't make us serial killers.

You think is better for your children to play with guns and watch GIJoe than playing Larry and watching Hentai? Your problem, not ours. You are not making a better world for the next generations, you are making a more censured world.
Why don't you put all this enthusiasm reporting seals and whales massacres, animal mistreat, toxic waste, nuclear contamination or war?
Do us a favour.

Si no quereis escuchar, no escucheis.

Best SouthPark Episode Ever

15 September, 2006

I really love South Park. I love to have dinner enjoying a South Park episode, and yesterday I saw the, in my view, best South Park episode ever. I thought the Rainforest episode was great, but this one is awesome!!
Best Friends Forever is hilarant, and parodies Constantine, Bush and LOTR, among others. The battle is full of 'LOTR-moments' really, really fun.

Spoiler warning.

Best Friends Forever starts when Cartman wakes his mother up; he needs her to get him to the toy store early so that he can be the first to get the new Sony PSP. When he arrives he sees there is a long line, with Kenny at the front of it. (Don't ask me how it is that Kenny has 250 bucks to get it).
Because he was first, Kenny got his PSP, but Cartman wasn’t as lucky. Kenny has found something he is really good at, he’s been playing the game “Heaven and Hell” for two weeks, day and night, doing anything else but playing. After he reaches level 60 he gets killed by a truck driver who is busy playing his own PSP.

It turnes out that God created the PSP to found somebody able to lead the Heaven Army against the army of Satan. Thus Kenny’s spirit rises up towards heaven, where he is met at the Pearly Gates by St. Peter, who tells him that heaven needs him. Archangel Michael tells Kenny that basically he is Keanu Reeves. Kenny is given a golden PSP to control the army of heaven, but then Kenny disappears because he has been revived, but only in a “persistive vegetative state.” He is a fucking tomato.

Among Kenny's friends starts an argument about whether they must kept him alive with machine aid or they should let him go. The dispute goes even to TV,... which turnes out at the end was precisely what Kenny wanted to avoid in his will.
Eventually they leave Kenny alone to die in peace. In the kingdom of heaven, the battle is raging and Kenny arrives to take control of the golden PSP. The epic battle rages and Kenny manages to defeat the army of Satan. Heaven is saved and Kenny is given a special reward, a statue of Keanu Reeves.

Me encanta South Park.
